Wizards Select New Field Manager For 2009

The Watertown Wizards of the New York Collegiate Baseball League have announced that 2008 pitching coach Brandon Potter has been chosen as the team's field manager for the 2009 season. Potter, the fifth head coach in franchise history, replaces Ryan Horning.

Potter is in his first season as an assistant coach at Cerro Coso Community College in eastern California. Previously, Potter has worked as an assistant at Minnesota State University and St. John Fisher College. After graduating from St. John Fisher College in 2004, Potter spent several summers working in the Cleveland Indians organization as a bullpen catcher for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.

Potter was an all-conference performer at St. John Fisher College as a catcher. He was chosen second-team All-Empire 8 in 2003 after he hit .315 in 28 games and drove in 17 runs. The following season, Potter was named All-Empire 8 honorable mention. He played 35 games as a senior and drove in 14 runs.

The Bloomfield, N.Y., native was the pitching coach for the Wizards last summer. He mentored Luis Castillo (Bellevue) to a second team All-NYCBL selection. Overall, the Wizards finished in fourth place in the six-team Eastern Division and made the playoffs for the fourth year in a row, the longest streak of any Eastern Division team.

Previous Watertown Wizards managers include Daniel Ninemire (2000), Paul Alteri (2001-2003), Ryan Horning (2008) and current general manager Todd Kirkey (2004-2007).

Former Pioneers To Lead Twin Tiers Squad In 2009

The Elmira Pioneers of the New York Collegiate Baseball League have announced that former Pio Ryan Giblin (Elmira '06-'07) has been hired as the team's field manager for the 2009 summer season. Former Elmira hurler Jeremy Gulich (Elmira '06) will act as the club's pitching coach. Giblin replaces three-year Pioneer skipper Matt Burch.

Giblin, a 2008 graduate of Mansfield University, is an assistant baseball coach at Millersville University. He was thrice named to the all-conference squad in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's East Division while playing for the Mountaineers. As a senior captain, Giblin hit .425 with four home runs and 41 runs batted in. He totaled 74 hits, 49 runs scored, 11 doubles, two triples, eight stolen bases and a team-high 149 defensive assists. The 2008 first-team all-league choice was second on the team in runs scored and hits and third in batting average and runs batted in. The captain also was tabbed first-team all-region and was an NCBWA Division II honorable mention All-American. Giblin was a second-team all-star in 2006 and 2007. In addition to winning all-conference accolades on the baseball field, Giblin was a Manfield University Presidential Scholar in the classroom.

After graduation, Giblin spent time in the Frontier League with the eventual league champion Windy City Thunderbolts.

The Featersville, Pa., native spent two years as a player with the Pioneers in 2006 and 2007. The 2007 Pioneers won the NYCBL championship. On the title team, Giblin was the only player to compete in all 42 regular season games. He batted .231, drove in 14 runs and contributed 100 defensive assists. Through two years in the Twin Tiers, Giblin played over 80 games between the regular season and the playoffs.

Jeremy Gulich was an assistant coach at William Penn University in 2008. The Statesmen went 26-15 overall, finished second in the Midwest Collegiate Conference with a 20-3 loop mark and appeared in the NAIA Region VII tournament. Gulich pitched for the Statesmen in 2007. He struck out 14 in seven appearances. Prior to William Penn, the Horseheads, N.Y., native pitched for the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford and Hudson Valley Community College. Gulich was 12-4 over two seasons for the Vikings of HVCC and he is second all-time in school history with 129.2 innings pitched. He was a first team All-Mountain Valley Conference choice in 2003.

Gulich pitched out of the Elmira Pioneers bullpen in 2006. He was second on the team in innings pitched for a reliever (18.2) and he tied for second with 12 relief appearances.

Both former Pio players took the field under three-year manager Matt Burch. Burch guided the Elmira squad to back-to-back playoff appearances (2006, 2007), a co-division title (2007) and a league championship (2007). The departed bench boss also skippered the Western Division all-stars to a 9-5 win over the Eastern Division all-stars in the 2008 NYCBL All-Star Game.

Mayotte Returning To Golden Eagles For '09 Campaign

The Glens Falls Golden Eagles of the New York Collegiate Baseball League have announced that John Mayotte will return as the team's field manager for the 2009 season. The upcoming season will be Mayotte's sixth as the manager of the Golden Eagles. He is the only manager in the history of the franchise.

Since joining the NYCBL in 2004, Mayotte's Golden Eagle teams have amassed a regular-season record of 132-77 (.632). The Golden Eagles have won three Eastern Division regular season titles (2004, 2007, 2008), two Eastern Division playoff titles (2007, 2008) and made two-straight appearances in the NYCBL championship Series (2007, 2008). The Golden Eagles have thrice finished the regular season with 30-or-more wins and have won 31 games or more in each of the last two seasons.

The 2007 Golden Eagles posted a 34-6 record in the regular season with an .850 winning percentage. The winning percentage was the highest among all of the team's in the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball (NACSB) and it set an NYCBL modern-day record (post-2000) for highest winning percentage. Only the 1985 Broome Rangers (25-3, .893) have a higher winning percentage in the over 30-year history of the NYCBL.

Mayotte, the 2007 NYCBL coach of the Year, has mentored 21 All-NYCBL selections (13 first team, eight second team) as well as the 2004 NYCBL Player of the Year Terry Blunt and the 2008 NYCBL Pitcher of the Year Shane Davis . At the end of the 2008 professional baseball season, 21 former Golden Eagles were listed on minor league and independent league rosters.

Prior to joining the Golden Eagles, Mayotte was a successful collegiate head coach at Eckerd (Fla.) and Troy State (now Troy University) amassing over 800 career victories.

Griffin To Skipper Mohawks in 2009

The Amsterdam Mohawks of the New York Collegiate Baseball League have hired Guntersville, Ala., native Keith Griffin as their field manager for the 2009 season. Griffin is the franchise's ninth different manager over the last nine years. He replaces Kevin Downing who guided the club to a second-place finish in the Eastern Division and an appearance in the playoffs.

Griffin takes over the Tribe after a seven-year stint as the head baseball coach at Okaloosa-Walton Community College (now Northwest Florida State College) in Niceville, Fla. Griffin tallied seven-straight winning seasons with the Raiders and never finished with fewer than 25 victories.

He put together a successful six-year campaign at Jefferson Davis Community College in Alabama from 1996 through 2002 before beComing the head coach at Okaloosa-Walton. Griffin's 1998 squad won the NJCAA Division II national championship. Additionally, he guided JDCC to two other World Series appearances, two Alabama state titles, six Alabama state tournament showings and five conference championships. Griffin was a two-time conference and state Coach of the Year and he was named National Coach of the Year in 1998.

The native Alabaman also has assistant coaching experience at the collegiate level at Okaloosa-Walton and Jacksonville University. Griffin was also a 10-year head coach at Pine Forest High School from 1980 to 1990. He played collegiately at Gadsden State Junior College and Livingston University.

Under Kevin Downing last season, the Amsterdam Mohawks belted a league-high 31 home runs and put together a 26-14 record, good for second place in the Eastern Division. The Tribe's 26 wins were the most by the franchise since 2005. Amsterdam has missed the playoffs just once over the last seven years.

Miners Hire Lau To Lead 2009 Squad

The Little Falls Miners of the New York Collegiate Baseball League have announced the hiring of Tim Lau as the team's field manager for the 2009 season. Lau, the third manager in franchise history, replaces Justin Gordon who skippered the Miners in 2007 and 2008.

Lau joins the NYCBL coaching ranks from Charleston Southern University where he spent two years as an assistant coach. Lau was the team's recruiting coordinator in 2008 and also worked with catchers and infielders. Last spring, three Buccaneers were named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team and freshman catcher Derek Smith was selected first-team All-Big South. Additionally, nine Bucs went on to be selected as all-stars in summer leagues across the country.

Before joining the Bucs, Lau was an assistant coach with the Rochester Honkers of the Northwoods League in 2005. The Honkers won the second-half South Division title and appeared in the Northwoods League playoffs for the first time since 2002. Rochester won a franchise-record 44 games and six players were selected to the Northwoods League All-Star Game.

Prior to working in the Big South, Lau was an assistant coach at Viterbo University in LaCrosse, Wisc. In 2002, the Wisconsin native began his coaching career at Holmen High School in Holmen, Wisc., as an assistant baseball coach. He helped guide the team to a pair of sectional titles and two appearances in the Wisconsin state tournament, one of which in 2002 resulted in a state runner-up finish. While working at Holmen, Lau also was the head coach of the Holmen American Legion team.

Lau is a 2001 graduate of Western Wisconsin University.

Lau is the Miners' third manager in the four-year history of the franchise. He takes over the helm from Justin Gordon. Gordon led the Miners to back-to-back playoff appearances in 2007 and 2008. Gordon is currently the pitching coach at Temple University. The Little Falls franchise has not missed the playoffs in three seasons of play.

NYCBL Alumni Spotlight, Syracuse University

Welcome back to the New York Collegiate Baseball League Alumni Spotlight. Every other week until the beginning of the 2009 NYCBL season in June, former NYCBL (NCBL or NESBA) players or coaches will be featured. Last June, 33 current or former New York Collegiate Baseball League players were selected in the Major League Baseball entry draft. Countless other former players and coaches have gone on to success at the collegiate and professional levels.

This week, the spotlight shines on three players from Syracuse University. Syracuse dropped baseball as a varsity sport in 1972, however three multi-sport athletes from the ‘Cuse competed in the Northeastern Collegiate Baseball League in the 1980s. In this week’s spotlight are former Orangemen Will Pennyfeather, Byron Abraham and Sonny Spera.

Will Pennyfeather spent two football seasons (1986, 1987) at Syracuse University as a back-up wide receiver playing for head coach Dick MacPherson. He was a back-up wide-out on Syracuse’s 11-0-1 national title contender in 1987. In the summer of 1988, the Perth Amboy, N.J., native took to the outfield for Auburn Pepsi-Cola of the NCBL. Through the first half of the ’88 season, Pennyfeather batted .317 with three home runs, 12 RBI and eight extra-base hits. He was selected to the 1988 NCBL All-Star Game (played in Auburn, N.Y.).

However, the SU pass catcher would not finish the NCBL season. He was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 1st. Pennyfeather made his Major League debut for the Pirates in 1992 as a replacement for an injured Barry Bonds. He played in 40 games for the Bucs over the next three seasons as he split time between Pittsburgh and Triple-A Buffalo as well as Triple-A Indianapolis after a 1994 trade to Cincinnati. Pennyfeather missed all of 1995 and then caught on with the Triple-A farm clubs of the Angels and Dodgers in 1996 and 1997.

The former SU pass catcher returned home to New Jersey to play for the Atlantic City Surf of the independent Atlantic League in 1998. He played in Atlantic City for three seasons, though he spent part of the 1999 campaign in the Anaheim Angels’ farm system. Pennyfeather played the better part of the final five years of his professional career in the independent Atlantic League with only a brief stint in the Northern League in 2003. During his final professional season in 2006, Pennyfeather was named the Newark Bears Player of the Year and he was an Atlantic League all-star.

Like Will Pennyfeather, Bryon Abraham took to the gridiron for the Syracuse University football team. The 1983 Parade All-American football star from Notre Dame High School in Utica, N.Y., attended the University of Notre Dame in 1983 but would later decide to transfer to Syracuse University. Abraham played three seasons of football for the Orangemen and was a senior on Syracuse’s 11-0-1 team in 1987. Abraham scored a touchdown in S.U.’s season-ending, 32-31, victory over West Virginia at the Carrier Dome to keep the Orange’s unbeaten record intact.

While at Notre Dame, Abraham entered the Northeastern Collegiate Baseball League as a member of the Rome Indians. He played in the 1984 NCBL All-Star Game at MacArthur Stadium and drove in one run as the North all-stars defeated the South all-stars, 8-6. Two seasons later, Abraham was one of the top players on an Indians team that featured future Major Leaguer Archi Cianfrocco and current LeMoyne head baseball coach Steve Owens. According to the Syracuse Herald Journal, the Utica, N.Y., native led the eight-team league with a .400 batting average.

Abraham graduated from Syracuse in 1988. He currently works in Utica, N.Y. and is the head football coach at Utica-Notre Dame High School.

Before Will Pennyfeather and Byron Abraham entered the Carrier Dome, Sonny Spera was knocking down jump shots for the Orangemen under head coach Jim Boeheim. The 6-foot-5 guard spent four seasons at Syracuse and was a team captain during his senior season in 1984-85. Spera’s hoops teams made the NCAA tournament in 1983, 1984 and 1985. Before heading to Syracuse, Spera was a standout high school pitcher at Union-Endicott. A chance meeting in 1982 between Spera and a Syracuse Junior Chiefs staffer at a local restaurant ended up with Spera in the NCBL.

Spera pitched in the Northeastern Collegiate Baseball League for the Syracuse Junior chiefs (1982) and the Syracuse Braves (1984). The 1982 Junior Chiefs made the inaugural NCBL playoffs but did not survive the six-team, round-robin tournament. Spera’s 1984 Syracuse Braves finished 12-21.

The Endicott, N.Y., native was a two-time draft pick of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers tabbed Spera in the 13th round (293rd overall) of the 1983 draft and then again in the 25th round (633rd overall) of the 1984 draft.

Instead of signing a professional contract, Spera retained his amateur status. After graduating in 1985, he attended graduate school at the University of Buffalo. Currently, Spera, a licensed dentist, operates his own practice in the Binghamton, N.Y., area.
