Brown's (Ithaca '92-'99 mgr.) Mainers Take NECBL Crown

The Sanford Mainers swept the Newport Gulls in best-of-three New England Collegiate Baseball League Championship Series, two games to none, to win their second NECBL championship. The Mainers took game one, 6-3, at home and then clinched the title with a 4-1 win at Newport's Cardines Field on Aug. 10. The Mainers were managed by SUNY Cortland skipper Joe Brown (Ithaca '92-'99 mgr.).

Brown led his team to a 28-14 regular season record, a Northern Division regular season and playoff championship and a number eight national ranking by PGCrosschecker.com. Four of Brown's Mainers were selected to the all-league team including Kyle Groth, Matthew Nandin (Geneva '06), Anthony D'Alfonso and League Defensive Player of the Year Cory Hunt (Saratoga '07).

The Mainers last won the NECBL championship in 2004 behind manager Scott Brown (Cortland '00-'01 mgr.). Scott Brown is currently an assistant coach at St. John's University.

In the spring, Joe Brown's SUNY Cortland Red Dragons advanced to the NCAA Division III World Series and finished with a 42-5 overall record. The Red Dragons won a conference championship in the State University of New York Athletic Conference and then finished undefeated in the Division III Auburn, N.Y., regional to move on to the World Series. The team also recorded a school-record 38-game winning streak. Brown's teams have made nine-straight appearances in the Division III playoffs and advanced to the World Series in five of those years.

Brown spent eight years in the Northeastern Collegiate Baseball League as the manager of the Ithaca Lakers. The Lakers put together three league titles (1994, 1996, 1997), three second-place finishes and two third-place finishes. The Lakers never once missed the NCBL playoffs.

Carraway (Saratoga '06) Named To Cape League All-Star Team

Hyannis Mets pitcher Andrew Carraway (Saratoga '06) has been named to the Cape Cod Baseball League's 2008 all-league team. He was one of just six starting pitchers chosen for the team and one of 22 players overall.

Carraway, a rising senior at the University of Virginia, went 4-2 with a 1.90 earned run average in 10 appearances. He walked 11 and struck out 57 in 47.1 innings pitched. The Hyannis hurler finished third in the league in strikeouts and fifth in ERA. Carraway was twice named the Cape Cod Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Week during the nine-week season. He also hurled a scoreless frame during the Cape Cod League All-Star Game in front of a sold-out crowd at Veterans Field in Chatham.

The best performance of the summer for Carraway came on July 28 on the road against the Wareham Gatemen. He held Wareham to a single run on five hits over eight innings, walked none and struck out eight. Carraway yielded a single in the first inning and did not allow another Gatemen hit until the fifth.

The Marietta, Ga., native was a member of New York Collegiate Baseball League's 2006 Saratoga Phillies.

Flores (LF '06) Named New York-Penn League All-Star MVP

Tri-City's David Flores (Little Falls '06) belted a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning to help the National League affiliate all-stars defeat the American League affiliate all-stars, 4-3, in the 2008 New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Aug. 19 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy, N.Y. Flores was named the All-Star Game's Most Valuable Player.

Flores, playing in front of a hometown crowd, advanced to the plate in the bottom of the ninth against Oneonta Tigers closer Tyler Stohr with two outs and runners on first and second. Flores slammed Stohr's second offering into deep left field. Left fielder Robbie Widlansky attempted to make a lunging catch on the warning track but dropped the ball when he collided with the fence. Tri-City's B.J. Shuck scored to tie the game and Batavia's Charles Cutler crossed the plate with the winning run for the National League affiliates, sending a sell-out crowd of 6,149 into a frenzy.

The Union City, Calif., native entered the game as in the sixth inning as a defensive replacement. He finished 1-for-2 with a walk and a two-run walk-off double.

A graduate of the New York Collegiate Baseball League has won the New York-Penn League All-Star Game Most Valuable Player award two years in a row. Last year, Oneonta's Chris Carlson (Glens Falls '04) was selected as the All-Star Game MVP. He swatted a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning to help the American League affiliate all-stars defeat the National League affiliate all-stars at Hudson Valley's Dutchess County Stadium.

Flores was a member of the NYCBL's Little Falls Diamond Miners in 2006. He led the league with 36 runs batted in between the regular season and playoffs. Flores hit .331 and finished second in the 14-team circuit with six clouts. The former Diamond Miner was chosen out of Sacramento State by the Houston Astros in the 18th round (542nd overall) of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft.

Tiffee (Hornell '98) Leads Team USA To Olympic Bronze

Terry Tiffee (Hornell '98) batted .324 in nine games and logged a team-high 12 hits, including six doubles, as the United States Olympic Baseball team put together a bronze-medal winning performance at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Team USA went 5-2 in pool play with victories over the Netherlands, China, Chinese Taipei, Canada and Japan. After falling in the semifinals of the medal round to Cuba, Team USA won the bronze with an 8-4 triumph over Japan.

Tiffee, a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system, was one of three players to start all nine of Team USA's games. He paced the Americans in hits and doubles and he tied for the team lead in at-bats (37), total bases (18) and sacrifice flies (two). Tiffee drove in five runs, scored four runs, walked twice, accumulated a .486 slugging percentage and did not committ an error in 84 defensive chances.

The North Pratt, Ark., native had at least one hit in seven of Team USA's nine games and he recorded five-straight multi-hit games to begin the Olympic tournament. Tiffee's best performance came in Team USA's come-from-behind win over Canada. He ripped a run-scoring double in the fifth inning to trim a two-run Canadian lead to one. After Brian Barden tied the game with an RBI double in the seventh, Tiffee belted a run-scoring double off of reliever Rheal Cormier to put the Americans on top.

Tiffee, who plays for the Las Vegas 51s, currently leads the Triple-A Pacific Coast League with a .373 batting average. Since returning from the Olympics, Tiffee has seven hits and four RBI for the 51s. The PCL regular season concludes on Labor Day.

The bronze-medal winning Tiffee played for the Hornell Dodgers of the Northeastern Collegiate Baseball League in 1998.

Amsterdam's Onorati Chosen As NYCBL Player of the Year

SYRACUSE, N.Y.The New York Collegiate Baseball League is pleased to announce that Amsterdam’s Mark Onorati (Manhattan) has been chosen as the 2008 NYCBL Player of the Year. Onorati helped the Amsterdam Mohawks to a 26-14 regular-season record, a second-place finish in the Eastern Division and a trip to the Eastern Division finals, the franchise’s first since 2005.

Onorati ended the regular season with a league-leading 38 runs scored and 32 runs batted in. He was second in the NYCBL with 20 stolen bases and 77 total bases and he tied for second with seven home runs. The Amsterdam center fielder batted .309 with 46 hits, 10 doubles, 13 walks, a .517 slugging percentage, a .400 on-base percentage and he was hit by a pitch 11 times.

The Williston Park, N.Y., native started 36 of Amsterdam’s 40 games and made 31 starts in center field. He posted 16 multi-hit and 12 multi-RBI efforts. Three times during the regular season, Onorati homered in back-to-back games. He started for the Eastern Division in the NYCBL All-Star Game and played the entire contest in center field. Onorati went 3-for-5 with three RBI and he was awarded the game’s Bob Bellizzi Big Stick award as the offensive MVP.

During the playoffs, Onorati totaled a team-high seven hits for the Mohawks. He batted .333 in five playoff games with two home runs and three RBI.

Onorati is a rising sophomore at Manhattan College. This past spring, Onorati was tabbed second-team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Jaspers outfielder finished second in the league with 60 hits and 53 runs scored during the regular season. He was second on the team in home runs (seven), doubles (14), on-base percentage (.454) and fielding percentage (.989).

The Manhattan College product is the first Amsterdam player to receive a major individual award from the NYCBL since Derrick Gordon was named the NYCBL Pitcher of the Year in 2004.

Glens Falls' Davis Selected NYCBL Pitcher of the Year

SYRACUSE, N.Y.The New York Collegiate Baseball League announced today that Shane Davis (Canisius), of the Glens Falls Golden Eagles, has been chosen as the 2008 NYCBL Pitcher of the Year. Davis is the first Glens Falls player to receive a major individual award from the league since Terry Blunt was named the NYCBL Player of the Year in 2004.

Davis concluded the regular season with a 5-0 record and a 0.33 earned run average in 54 innings pitched. Davis allowed five runs (two earned) on 31 hits, walked eight and struck out 31. He pitched two complete games, yielded three extra-base hits and held opposing Eastern Division hitters to a .171 batting average.

The Belmont, Ont., Canada, native pitched the first nine-inning no-hitter in Glens Falls Golden Eagles franchise history on June 11 against the Bennington Bombers at East Field. Davis walked one, hit one and struck out five. He allowed just two base runners and retired 26 of the 28 batters he faced. At one point, Davis sat down 15-straight Bennington hitters. The Canadian southpaw pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout against Amsterdam on July 9 at East Field.

Davis started the season with 16-straight scoreless innings. He did not allow a run until the third inning of his third start. Even more impressive, Davis did not give up an earned run for 34-straight frames from June 16 through July 22. He also pitched a scoreless inning in the NYCBL All-Star Game on July 7 at Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds in Watertown, N.Y.

In the spring, Davis set a single-season school record at Canisius College with 12 victories. The lefty finished among the national freshman leaders in wins and ERA (2.42). He helped the Golden Griffs to a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season championship. Davis, as a redshirt freshman, was named the MAAC Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year, the first player to ever garner both awards in the same season. He earned freshman All-America recognition from Baseball America, Pro-Line/NCBWA, Louisville Slugger, Rivals.com, and Ping! Baseball. Davis was also named Louisville Slugger third-team All-America, NCBWA third-team All-America and Ping! Baseball third-team All-America

Hornell's Tenhouse Named NYCBL Coach of the Year

SYRACUSE, N.Y.The New York Collegiate Baseball League announced today that Jake Tenhouse, manager of the Hornell Dodgers, has been named the 2008 NYCBL Coach of the Year.

Tenhouse’s Dodgers won the Western Division regular season title, amassed the best record and winning percentage in the NYCBL and advanced to the Western Division finals. Hornell finished the regular season with a 32-10 record and .762 winning percentage. The Dodgers’ 32 victories are the most by a Western Division team since the 2005 Hornell squad posted 34 triumphs in a 47-game season. The team’s divisional finals appearance was its’ first since 2005.

Tenhouse guided his club, featuring just three position-player substitutes, to a pair of seven-game winning streaks and a six-game winning streak over the course of the two-month regular season. The Dodgers held first place or were tied for first in the Western Division from June 12 through July 21. After falling a half-game behind Brockport on July 22, the Dodgers closed the regular season with seven-straight wins to finish five games ahead of the eventual league champions.

Hornell’s .762 winning percentage during the 42-game regular season was the highest in the NYCBL and the best among 71 teams over eight leagues in the National Alliance for College Summer Baseball (NACSB). The .762 winning percentage is the second highest in the NYCBL’s modern era (post-2000). Last summer, the Glens Falls Golden Eagles posted an .850 winning percentage.

The Dodgers have won four Western Division regular-season titles since 2003 (2003, 2004, 2005, 2008) and made the playoffs in six out of the last seven years.

Tenhouse, the first-year Dodgers bench boss, is an assistant baseball coach at St. Louis Community CollegeFlorissant Valley.

RIVERBATS WIN NYCBL CHAMPIONSHIP IN 10 INNINGS

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. – Championship Series’ Most Valuable Player Ryan Nokelby (Texas Lutheran) plated Jeff Abrams (Binghamton) with a 10th-inning sacrifice fly as the Brockport Riverbats edged the Glens Falls Golden Eagles, 3-2, in 10 innings to win the 2008 New York Collegiate Baseball League championship. The Riverbats won the best-of-three series, two games to one. The title is the first in the five-year history of the franchise.

Abrams singled off Glens Falls reliever Marc Damon (Pima CC) to start the tenth inning. David Ahonen (Ithaca) advanced Abrams to second with a sacrifice bunt. Kyle Harvey (Texas Lutheran) and Billy Herman (Slippery Rock) drew back-to-back one-out walks to load the bases. Anthony Giansanti (Siena) replaced Marc Damon to face Ryan Nokelby. Nokelby hit a long fly ball to left field that was caught by Jonathan White, but Abrams scored from third to break a 2-2 tie.

The Golden Eagles threatened in the bottom of the tenth but could not score. Todd Brazeal (South Florida) worked a lead-off walk. Brazeal moved to second on a Nick McCoy (San Diego) sacrifice bunt and then to third on a Jonathan Koscso (South Florida) ground out. Brockport’s Jeremy Macklin (Huston-Tillotson) forced Curt Courtwright to ground out to second to end the game.

Macklin pitched three innings of scoreless relief. He allowed one hit, walked one and struck out two. Brockport starter P.J. Saporito pitched seven strong innings. Saporito yielded two runs on four hits and struck out seven. Jeff Abrams had a game-high two hits for the Riverbats and Corey Taylor (Binghamton) clubbed an RBI double.

Marc Damon suffered the hard-luck loss. He allowed one run on one hit, walked two and struck out five. Damon retired the first nine batters he faced. Starter Scott DeNault (San Diego) pitched the first six innings. DeNault gave up two runs on three hits, walked three and struck out six. Game-two hero Jonathan White (Vanderbilt) was 2-for-4 with one RBI and Chad Stang (Midland) drove in one run.

The Golden Eagles struck first in the second inning. Jonathan Koscso belted a lead-off single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and went to third on a wild pitch. Chad Stang plated Koscso with a ground out to the right side to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Brockport plated two runs in the sixth inning to gain a one-run edge. With runners on first and second and one out, Corey Taylor smashed a Scott DeNault offering to left-center field. Ryan Nokelby scored from second to tie the game. An error on the relay attempt by Glens Falls allowed Jesse Bosnik (St. Bonaventure) to score all the way from first.

Glens Falls knotted the score at two in the seventh inning. Scott Lawson (Miami, Fla.) ripped a lead-off single to left field and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Jonathan White slapped a game-tying single to right field that scored Lawson from second.

Notes: After the game, the league handed out its’ postseason awards. Brockport pitcher Ryan O’Rourke (Merrimack) took home the Tom Kenney Golden Glove.
