Beaulac (Amsterdam '06-'07) Impressive In First Pro Start

Former New York Collegiate Baseball League all-star Eric Beaulac (Amsterdam '06-'07) made his first professional start on July 15 for the Kingsport Mets of the rookie-level Appalachian League.

Beaulac pitched four strong innings but the Mets fell to the Johnson City Cardinals, 5-4, at Hunter Wright Stadium. Beaulac allowed one run on two hits and struck out four. According to the local newspaper, Beaulac hit 98mph on the radar gun with his fastball. You can read more about the game by clicking here.

The Troy, N.Y., native has made two appearances since his start against Johnson City. Beaulac started and earned a win against the Bristol Sox on July 20. He struck out five in five innings and yielded one run on three hits. Beaulac pitched in relief on Friday night against the Princeton Rays. He allowed one unearned run on four hits and struck out four as Kingsport knocked off Princeton, 9-4.

The 6-foot-5 hurler is 1-1 with a 1.89 earned run average in six appearances for the K-Mets. He has 23 strikeouts in 19 innings pitched and he is holding opposing Appy League hitters to a .214 batting average.

Beaulac, who was drafted this June by the Mets, made his professional debut last month for the Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York-Penn League. He made two appearances for the Coney Island club before being sent down to Kingsport.

Beaulac pitched for the Amsterdam Mohawks in 2006 and 2007. He was the starting pitcher in the 2007 NYCBL All-Star Game at Shuttleworth Park for the Eastern Division. Last summer, Beaulac was named among the league's top prospects by Baseball America and Perfect Game Scouting.

2007 Home Run Derby Champ Kowalski (Little Falls '07) Anchors North Shore Navigators Bullpen

Chris Kowalski (Little Falls '07) won the 2007 New York Collegiate Baseball League Home Run Derby at Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam, N.Y. This summer, Kowalski finds himself in a much more different role as a pitcher for the New England Collegiate Baseball League's North Shore Navigators.

Kowalski, as a member of the Navigators relief corps, leads the team with 17 appearances. He is 1-2 with one save and a 2.42 earned run average. Kowalski has given up six earned runs in 22.1 innings pitched. He has walked eight, struck out 22 and he is holding opposing NECBL hitters to a .253 batting average. Kowalski's 17 relief appearances for North Shore tie him with Vermont's Alejandro Balsinde for the league lead.

The Boston, Mass., native is a rising junior at Boston College. As a freshman in 2007, he played in just six games for the Eagles and did not pitch to a single batter. This spring, Kowalski took the mound for the first time in his Boston College career. He finished second on the team with 23 appearances. Kowalski went 0-2 with two saves and a 4.31 earned run average. He struck out 21 and walked seven in 31.2 innings pitched. Kowalski made his collegiate mound debut in a victory over Georgia Southern on February 24.

Last summer, Kowalski made just six relief appearances for the Little Falls Miners and spent most games in the outfield. He batted .281 with one home run and 10 runs batted in. Kowalski, in 28 games, clubbed 27 hits and scored 14 runs.

Through two seasons with the Rascals, Benacka amassed 33 saves, including a club single-season record 20 last year. This season, the former Hornell reliever was 3-0 with 13 saves and a team-best 0.35 earned run average for River City. He allowed one earned run and 10 hits in 26 innings pitched. The Lindenwood University product was named second-team All-NYCBL at the end of the season.

Former Hornell Dodgers pitcher, Lindenwood University star and River City Rascal Josh Kinney (Hornell '98) won a World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2006.

Trio Of NYCBL Grads Return To CNY

The Tri-City ValleyCats of the New York-Penn League are set to play a three-game series with the Auburn Doubledays from Tues., July 22 through Thurs., July 24, at Falcon Park in Auburn, N.Y. It's a homecoming of sorts for three New York Collegiate Baseball League players.

2007 NYCBL Player of the Year Shane Wolf (Elmira '06-'07), 2007 first team all-league pitcher Ashton Mowdy (Geneva '07) and 2006 first team all-league infielder David Flores (Little Falls '06) play for the Tri-City ValleyCats. In addition, Wolf pitched for nearby Ithaca College and is from Freeville, N.Y., located just outside of Ithaca.

Opponents against Wolf are batting .225. The former Ithaca College star made his professional debut on June 21st against Oneonta, combing with Ashton Mowdy and another ValleyCats pitcher on the first no-hitter in franchise history.

The Freeville, N.Y., native led the Elmira Pioneers to the NYCBL title last summer and was named the league MVP and the Most Valuable Player of the NYCBL Championship Series. This past spring, Wolf pitched for Ithaca College and helped the Bombers to a conference championship and an appearance in the NCAA Division III regionals in Auburn.

Mowdy, a fireballer from Oklahoma, is 4-1 with a 4.50 earned run average in 10 relief appearances. He has allowed 10 runs on 17 hits in 20 innings pitched. Mowdy has fanned 27 and walked 10 and he is holding opposing hitters to a .224 batting average. In Tri-City's combined no-hitter, Mowdy hurled the final two frames.

The Mustang, Okla., native was a first team all-league choice last summer as he helped the Geneva Red Wings to the playoffs for the first time since 2003. Mowdy was among the finalists for the NYCBL Pitcher of the Year award.

Flores is among the ValleyCats leading hitters through 33 games. Flores is batting .286 with five home runs and 16 runs batted in. He has totaled 26 hits, 15 runs scored, eight doubles, five walks and a .538 slugging percentage. Flores is second on the team in home runs, third in batting average and fourth in runs batted in.

The Union City, Calif., native was a member of the 2006 Little Falls Diamond Miners. Flores led the league with 36 runs batted in and he slammed six home runs between the regular season and the playoffs. Flores and the Diamond Miners advanced to the semifinals of the NYCBL playoffs before bowing out to the eventual league champion Saratoga Phillies.

All three games (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Falcon Park in Auburn, N.Y. For ticket information, call 315-225-2489.

Five Former NYCBL Players Chosen For NECBL All-Star Game

Five former New York Collegiate Baseball League players have been chosen to participate in the 2008 New England Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game. The game will take place on Sunday, July 20, at Fussenich Park in Torrington, Conn and it will pit the North Division all-stars against the South Division all-stars.

Sanford's Matthew Nandin (Geneva '06) and Corey Hunt (Saratoga '07) will play for the North along with Vermont's Kevin Nieto (Amsterdam '07) and Dusty Odenbach (Geneva '07). Sanford manager Joe Brown (Ithaca '92-'99 mgr.) will skipper the North squad.

Pittsfield's Chris Edmondson (Watertown '07) will start in the outfield for the South Division.

Matthew Nandin and Corey Hunt are two of the top hitters for the Sanford Mainers. Heading into Thursday's games, Nandin is batting .350 with 10 RBI and 36 hits. He leads the Sanford defense with 79 assists. Hunt has a .313 batting average for the Mainers in 23 games. He has collected 23 hits, 10 runs batted in, 10 runs scored and five stolen bases.

Nandin was a member of the 2006 Geneva Red Wings. He played in 38 games for Geneva and collected a team-high 132 assists. At the plate, Nandin totaled 30 hits, 20 runs scored and six runs batted in.

Hunt played for the Saratoga Phillies last summer. Hunt batted .290 in limited action for Saratoga with 13 runs batted in. He formed a potent double-play combination with Brian Harris (Vanderbilt). Hunt collected 20 hits and scored 18 runs for the Spa City squad.

Speedster Kevin Nieto leads the NECBL with 19 stolen bases on 19 attempts. Through 23 games, Nieto is batting .301 with 25 hits, 18 runs scored, three home runs and six runs batted in. The Miami, Fla., native is second among the Vermont Mountaineers' regulars in batting average.
