The Detroit Tigers have promoted outfielder Casper Wells (Saratoga '04) from the Class-A West Michigan Whitecaps to the Double-A Erie Seawolves of the Eastern League.
Wells made his Double-A debut on Friday night against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in Manchester, N.H. Wells went 2-for-4 with one run batted in and one walk as Erie defeated New Hampshire, 9-4.
Earlier this month, the Schenectady, N.Y., native was one of five West Michigan Whitecaps named to the Midwest League All-Star Game.

Opening Night News and Notes
- Watertown drew a franchise opening-night record crowd of 2,473. It's one of the largest crowds in the nine-year history of the franchise. Last summer, the Wizards drew an all-time franchise and league-record 3,729 for an exhibition game against the Niagara Power.
- Defending Eastern Division champion Glens Falls welcomed in 1,103 for a Friday night showdown against rival Amsterdam. It's the largest crowd that East Field has hosted in the recent history of the franchise.
- The Glens Falls-Amsterdam game featured a battle of All-Americans. Amsterdam started Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Dan Forman (Manhattan). Glens Falls countered with Louisville Slugger All-American (also a Freshman All-American) Shane Davis (Canisius). The match-up lived up to its hype with Forman pitching seven shutout innings with six strikeouts and Davis working five scoreless frames with five strikeouts. Both teams combined for five hits, two for Amsterdam and three for Glens Falls.
- Hornell used a pitcher-by-committee approach in its season-opening win over Bolivar. The four Hornell pitchers worked a four-hit shutout and the Dodgers offense scored four runs. Matt Stewart (St. Bonaventure) started for Hornell in a pre-determined rotation and earned a win with only three innings of work. He allowed two Bolivar hits and struck out five.
- After hitting 22 combined home runs last season, Watertown and Little Falls each smashed one home run each on Friday night. Andrew Stafford (Oakland) lined a three-run home run over the left-field fence in the top of the first inning to give the Miners a 3-0 lead. He was the third batter of the game after the first two reached on a hit-by-pitch and walk. Keli'i Zablan (Southern Utah) slugged a home run for the Wizards in the fourth inning, also to left field.
- Niagara's 20 runs on opening night is a franchise record. The Power plated 208 runs last season in 42 regular-season games for an average of nearly five runs per game. The previous high was 17 against Webster on June 17, 2007, at Sal Maglie Stadium. Niagara defeated Webster that day, 17-11. Niagara and Allegany County's 29 runs combined is also a Niagara record. The previous high was from the aforementioned Niagara-Webster game.
- Niagara earned an opening-night win and scored 20 runs without second-year manager Sam Kirby. Assistant coach Jon Copeland, the head baseball coach at Division-II Nyack (N.Y.) College, served as the team's head coach. Kirby is currently out west finishing up some academic requirements at Western Oregon University.
- The Watertown Wizards debuted brand-new uniforms last night. The new uniforms, which can be seen under "Friday Night Photos" featured a purple sleeveless jersey that has the Wizards logo on the left chest and a white number on the back. The players wear a yellow shirt underneath the jersey. Allegany County will debut new uniform tops this weekend also.

Carlson (GF '04) & Wells (Saratoga '04) To Play In Midwest League All-Star Game
Former New York Collegiate Baseball League players Chris Carlson (Glens Falls '04) and Casper Wells (Saratoga '04) have been selected to play in the 2008 Midwest League All-Star Game. The game will be held on June 17 at the Dow Diamond in Midland, Mich.
The former I-87 rivals both play for the West Michigan Whitecaps, a single-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. Carlson and Wells were among five Whitecaps chosen to compete for the Midwest League's Eastern Division all-star team. Carlson has been named the Eastern Division's starter at first base. Wells will be a reserve.
Carlson has been a stalwart in the Whitecaps line-up at first base. He leads the club in runs batted in (32), hits (52) and slugging percentage (.469). Through 46 games, Carlson is batting .291 with seven home runs, 22 runs scored, nine doubles and 11 walks. His .291 batting average is second on the team.
The Topeka, Kan., native is in his third season with the Tigers organization. Carlson was taken by Detroit in the 29th round (862nd overall) of the 2006 draft. He started his professional career in 2006 with the Tigers affiliate in the Gulf Coast League. Carlson batted .309 with 11 home runs and 46 RBI for the GCL Tigers and he named to the league's postseason all-star team. Last summer, Carlson smashed 10 home runs and drove in 51 runs for the New York Penn League's Oneonta Tigers. He competed in the NY-Penn League All-Star Game and was the game's Most Valuable Player.
Wells set a West Michigan Whitecaps franchise record earlier this season when he became the fastest player in team history to clout 10 home runs. Wells' 10 home runs are first on the ball club and third in the Midwest League. In 48 games played, he is batting .237 with 26 RBI, 41 hits, 28 runs scored, seven doubles, 20 walks, 15 stolen bases and a .451 slugging percentage.
The Schenectady, N.Y., native is playing his fourth season in the Tigers organization. Detroit chose Wells out of Towson University in the 14th round (420th overall) of the 2005 entry draft. He spent his first professional season (2005) in the Gulf Coast League with the GCL Tigers. After playing in the GCL, Wells spent two seasons with the Oneonta Tigers of the New York-Penn League. Last year, he set a career-high with a .265 batting average, nine home runs and 47 runs batted in. Wells played in the New York-Penn League All-Star Game last August, along with Chris Carlson, and helped the American League affiliates to a victory.
