Kinda surprised Branham or Macklin didn't make either team as a reliever.
I think Macklin closed out the season with 22 consecutive scoreless innings.
Are these teams based on stats alone? Or are they influenced by potential draft status as well?
Stats alone. There are separate prospect lists that are published by Baseball America and Perfect Game Scouting based on who is a prospect. You can be an all-star and not a prospect and vice versa.
The reliever category this year was extremely close. Not as close as last year's six-way-tie, but fairly close. People may have been torn on which one to pick since they both closed for Brockport this year. Branham had more saves but Macklin's numbers are a little better.
Thanks John. Is the prospect list gonna be published soon?
Macklin amassed more than 24 consecutive innings of scores pitching effort and had not allowed a run since June 22. To not get a second team nod let alone a first team nod is beyond me!
If you compare Macklin and Davis overall (regular and post) season, I believe Macklin's numbers are better (for sure given ERA at 1.09). Davis pitched extremely well but given the chance I believe Macklin would out perform Davis in the end.
It just doesn't make sense.
Are these all the awards or are there more to come?
These are all the awards that we have for the players. I'm not sure about the release date of the prospects list. My guess would be later this month. Both Perfect Game and Baseball America release their lists for everyone at the same time. Some leagues i.e. Cape, Northwoods, WCCBL are still playing. My guess would be the end of the month or early September for those.
In regards to the selections, postseason stats do not figure in the all-league teams. It's based solely on the regular season and selections are made before the conclusion of the playoffs.
Thanks John for the clarification. Still believe that Macklin should be a second team selection, afterall he did finish ahead of Goodin in the stats...
It's also interesting to note that Macklin pitch about 1/2 the number of innings Davis pitched and their numbers are nearly the same! Example: 28 strikeouts in 26 innings for Macklin and 31 K's in 54 innings for Davis.
Honestly, I think that the stats should speak for themselves. Macklin only had two saves but this wasn't his falt, he wasn't given as many opportunities as Goodin. In this case the saves number along swayed those making the call (in my opinion) this is something that isn't in the players control. All the other stats are within the players control.
whats worse in my mind is the selection of tenhouse as Coach of the Year.
Sure they had the best record in the West, but look how he did against the Riverbats. 0-6. The two games Hornell beat the Bats, Tenhouse wasnt even at the games.
Personally I think more time needs to be spent equally between East and West, because it seems to me like people are oblivious to the talent in the West.
Butch,
Actually, Hornell was 2-4 against Brockport during the regular season .
The team that wins the league championship does not automatically sweep the league awards. In fact, the Coach of the Year has not been the coach of the league champion since 2005. Genesee Valley's Jason Bunting won it in 2006 (team eliminated in the semifinals) and Glens Falls' John Mayotte (GF lost in the finals) won it last year. Not to mention the West had the Player of the Year in 2006 and 2007.
Tenhouse's team won 32 of 42 games it played and held on to first place for most of the regular season.
Also, there was an even mix of players on the all-league team between the East and West. The numbers were: 17 East, 20 West.
Please, check your facts before complaining.
I'm surprised to see Kody Johnson from Glens Falls on the 1st team. He was dismissed from the team during the playoffs for violating team rules. While I understand that you only consider stats from the regular season, surely quitting or being dismissed from the team should factor in somewhere?
Can someone explain what stats were used for the pitching choices? More than era obviously. Thanks.
In regards to Kody Johnson, yes, he was dismissed during the playoffs. But, that doesn't diminish what he did during the regular season. Please remember, these awards are based on regular season performance and not what happens in the playoffs or off the field.
As for the pitching stats. All pitching stats are used in choosing the all-league pitchers and not just ERA. A pitcher's performance over the entire season is figured in to deciding whether or not he's chosen for the all-league team.
only two from bomber nation? we had a complete turnaround this year!
thanks for the information, mr mcgraw. two questions, is there a minimum number of appearances or innings for pitching and is defense figured into the position player selection very heavily or is it more on the players offensive numbers?
There's no minimum standards set for the awards. In terms of hitters, just about all of the players competed in a majority of their team's games so I don't necessarily see that as an issue. The one player that did not play in a high number of games had exceptional numbers in the games that he did participate in thus necessitating a selection.
It's obviously different for pitchers and a little more subjective since some pitchers throw more than others - this is why we have a separate category for starters and relievers.
I'll be honest and say I'm not sure how much fielding numbers come into play with the selection process. If two players have similar-type numbers then maybe it does, I couldn't say. I'd say the selection process is more weighted to a players' offensive prowess - being a solid defensive player doesn't hurt.
In regards to the Bennington comment, I think the two best players were selected. Bercume was one the league's leading hitters and Bergman turned in an outstanding season at shortstop.
for future awards, i think playoffs should be taken into consideration
this is where the true stars come out
yes you are right that tenhouse was 0-4 against the riverbats...the two games that the dodgers won tenhouse was out of town attending a wedding
and then got swept in the playoffs...for the season 0-6. top players and for this matter coaches need to perform against top teams
and obviously the Riverbats were the top team in the league this year.
and for whoever posted that the true champion came out of the east...PLEASE.
only 2 teams with above 500 records...thats pathetic...this isnt the eastern conference in the NBA where the Knicks make the playoffs 20 games under
Bats are Champs...cant take it away from them
Dennstedt for Coach of the Year
Continued arguing that Coach Dennstedt is the Coach of the Year in the NYCBL isn't going to get the league to change the awards nor how they are selected.
Questions about certain issues are fine but persisted complaining will lead to this comment board being locked.
Thanks.
I attended many of the Brockport games. I feel like Coach Dennstedt did a fantastic job with his team. If you look at his roster he did not have kids from big name schools, and had a majority of his team from D2 and D3 schools. Coach Dennstedt and his assistant Coach Scott did a great job at keeping their players loose. I noticed even late into the long season the bats still loving the game. Even at his young age he still had the respect of every player on his team. When it came down to it, it looked at if Coach Dennstedt was an older brother almost to his team.
And after attending so many of the Bats game and hearing many of their conversations it seems to be that Coach Jake Dennstedt was the head "Jester" in a group of kids who love to play the game.
Jake Dennstedt for President '08!
John , I think you did a great job this year with stats and you were a true credit to the NYCBL.
As for the selection of Onorati for player of the year. I believe he was a good player but this players attitude was poor. He didn't hustle when he grounded out and in the outfield he was lazy. I believe a player of the year in such a good league as the NYCBL should lead by example, this kid didn't. This will show up in the future he is not a leader. JUst my opinion from someone who observed 15 of his games.
Marc Damon From Glens Falls didnt make a team? saves leader, strike outs in less innings?
It is a real shame that People are getting offended by who the league chooses to honor with Coach of the Year or Debate who deserves the honors. All these young men are obviously here for the summer to improve their skills and I bet that most of them would be offended to read this and find grown adults arguing over who got what!
I personally am tired of reading about austindad and his own opinions on Shane Davis. He saw Shane pitch once I have seen Shane pitch several times both in the league and during college the guy deserves every honor he has gotten. austindad to you I ask this what national recognition has Macklin gotten? Stop your whining and get over it already I am sure the kid has!
