Shuttleworth Park Receives $130,000 Improvement Grant

From AmsterdamMohawks.com

The Amsterdam Industrial Developoment Agency recently issued approval for $130,000 worth of funding to help further improve the baseball facility at Shutteworth Park, home of the Amsterdam Mohawks. This marks the second time that the AIDA has assisted with the project at Shuttleworth Park. In 2003, they issued a check for $25,000 for funding. In total, over $300,000 worth of improvements will have been made at the baseball facility since the Mohawks moved to Amsterdam in 2003 from Schenectady.

In 2007, the Mohawks set a single-season attendance record, breaking the 15,000-fan barrier. With the new improvements, added staff, and momentum from 2007, the Mohawks are projecting 25,000-30,000 fans in 2008. Among the improvements slated for the park this fall is the completion of the new bathroom/concession area that has sat half-finished for the past season and a half. In addition, a 2500 square foot elevated party deck will be constructed, an air conditioned luxury suite will be built over the new concession stand, a kid's play area/birthday party area will be built down the first base line, and new vending areas will be built in place of the portable tents used in 2007. In addition, the two remaining sections of wooden grandstands that need to be constructed will also be built. Many other cosmetic projects will also be included in the upgrades including a giant clock in the outfield and a giant "green monster" type wall along with other smaller projects.

Additional parking will also be added as part of the project. Work has already begun and is expected to complete by Thanksgiving. Mohawks President Brian Spagnola is overseeing all of the projects at the park.

Nitros Hire New Manager

The Allegany County Nitros of the New York Collegiate Baseball League have announced that Micheal August has been hired as the team's field manager for the 2008 season.

August is an assistant baseball coach at Delaware State University. August works with Delaware State's hitters and infielders and serves as the Hornets third base coach. This spring will mark August's third season as an assistant at Delaware State and fifth overall. He helped guide the Hornets to a MEAC North division title in 2003 and an appearance in the MEAC tournament championship game in 2004. After taking a year off in 2005, August re-joined the staff in 2006.

As a player, August helped Delaware State to two MEAC championships and a school record 40-win season in 2002. He also played at Cecil Community College in Maryland for two seasons. August graduated from Delaware State in 2002 with a degree in sport management.

The Allegany County Nitros have been to the NYCBL playoffs four years in a row and made the NYCBL Championship Series in 2006 after winning the Western Division title. Former Nitros managers include Francis Marion assistant Robbie Wilson and Eastern Kentucky assistant Brandon Scott.
